Is This Fair or No?
Sunday, May 31, 2009 Edit ThisWorkers all around the world, including white-collar employees, are experiencing the pains of the global economic slowdown. Many companies have announced zero or meagre bonus pays and salary increments for their staff. Income projections have been slashed to reflect the protracted recession. Actual business revenue has been drastically reduced.
Unfortunately, workers are expected to put in more to bring back the same level of production. Apart from that, the most painful thing is laying off the staff, I, myself, being a victim of a recent lay-off.
It wasn't losing my job that left a bitter taste in my mouth. But, by the way the layoff was handled.
There's no doubt that the layoff experience is an awkward, and often painful, experience.
(I am in the IT field) The situation obviously is much more difficult, and more stressful, when an IT leader's leadership and management skills aren't finely honed when it comes to conducting layoffs. Apart from that, partiality and racism.
I felt I wasn't good at my job, was useless and worthless. But then, a kind colleague consoled me and told that he, himself, was terminated 8 times!!! He was laughing his lungs out while he told me this. For a moment, I forgot my pains. And, that's when he told that "Something much better is in store for you!" Those words really lifted up my spirits and I began to think positive about my termination.
Well, I didn't intend to write about my layoff details. I, actually, thought of writing this post, when one of my close friend informed me about the increment he got very recently apart from being promoted to a high position. Congrats on your promotion buddy! :)
He got an increase of K.D. 25/- plus a gift – a Nokia N96!!! While he and some of his colleagues (who works day and night) got a meagre increment, some other rascals (who kiss their boss' ass and doesn't do much for the company) got away with an increment of K.D. 100/-.
Do you think this is fair?
